COOLEY Family History
This interesting surname is of Anglo-Saxon and Irish origin, and has two possible sources, the first being from a nickname for a swarthy person, from the Old English pre 7th Century "colig", dark, black, a derivative of "col", (char)coal. The second source is an Anglicized form of the Gaelic-Irish "Mac Cuille" or "Mac Giolla Chuille", of uncertain origin. This sept was from Connacht and there were many references to members of it in the 16th Century fiants, relating to Counties Roscommon, Galway and Clare. Hi, I am trying to find information reg my GG grandfather Joseph Cooley. He married Rebecca McCullough in Old Monklands , Scotland in 1857. I know he had a brother James. I believe he was born in county Armagh Ireland in or about 1835.
Any help would be great.
Cheers
Yvonne

I am fairly new to exploring my family history, but I have disovered that my great grandmother (maternal side) was Elizabeth Cooley (1868 -1904)
Elizabeth's father was Nicholas Cooley (1832 - 1875)
Nicholas' father was Laurence (?) Cooley,
born ~1811? in Glenaneal, Galway, Tuam district
died ~ 1897??
I would be fascinated to learn more, if anyone can give me any pointers. Thank you, margi jackson?
