In Scotland, it is a locational name for a place in Aberdeenshire. Bass of Inverurie is the remains of a motte and bailey castle, dating from the 12th Century. The bass is a natural mound which was converted to a motte by the scarping of its sides and the excavation of a ditch around it which is now infilled. The bailey lies to the East, known as the Little Bass.

In 1881, the surname was frequent in East Midlands and South East England, especially Essex, Bedfordshire, Huntingdon and Cambridgeshire. Essex with 456 occurrences. 

In 1881, the most common Bass occupation in the UK was Agricultural Labourer, along with Labourer and Farmer reported as the top 3 occupations worked by the surname.

The noted, Alfie Bass (1916 – 1987) was an English actor born in Bethnal Green, London. He appeared in a variety of stage, film, television and radio productions throughout his career including Alfie, also starring Michael Caine.
