RUTLEDGE Family History
This name, with variant spellings Rutledge, Rudledge, Rookledge and Rucklidge, is chiefly found on the English\Scottish borders, and is believed to be of topographical origin from residence by a borders stream named with the Northern Medieval English 'rout', itself coming from the Scandinavian 'ruta' meaning a roar of loud noise, plus the Medieval English 'lache' or 'leche', a stream. There is a place in Cumbria called Routledge Burn, but surname derivation from this spot is unlikely as the place was not recorded until the 16th Century, and the surname first appears on record in Scotland towards the end of the 15th Century, (see below)...Select Audience

Barbara Jane Rutledge is my friend's Great Grandmother who was allegedly born in Ireland and is the daughter of a Nathaniel Rutledge. Details about her are sketchy . Possibly born 1842in Ireland. Married James Short from Ireland . Last address in Ireland is given as Roscrea, Kings County before going to England and then to NSW Australia. She left Liverpool, England bound for Australia in 1866 with James Short. She preferred to be called "Jane".
Rutledge/ O’Shaughenessy
Hi, my name is Robynn and I am a bastard daughter of a Robert E Rutledge who was born in Alabama, then lived in Georgia, and settled in California as an engineer. I’ve always had a need to discover my roots: I tried ancestry and it looks like my ancestors trace back to Tyrone, and came to America during the revolution. Not positive, please if you know anything, and please I’m not here to hurt, I’ve had enough of that searching for my father and not finding him before his death. Robert, Edgar, and Lucian seem to be paternal ancestors. Any information about Ireland or Scotland roots would be amazing, my dad was Presbyterian. I would just like to know what makes me.. I guess I’m a lose Rutledge too, but unfortunately I don’t get to claim the surname. DNA does prove it is though, so that much I know! Thank you!
Gary L Rutledge
I am also a Gary Rutledge. Minnesota, USA resident. Family came from Alabama where I believe I can trace back to before the American Civil War 1850s . Retiring soon, will have time for more investigation as a traveling man then.

My mother was Gladys Margaret Ruttledge from Waterford. Born in 1908. She had 3 brothers Freddie - Bank Manager in Dublin who retired to Cork and Charlie and Eric who sailed off to live in South Africa in the 1920's. One was in tobacco farming and the other was in holiday let's. Freddie children and grandchildren still live in Cork. Their sister Gladys, my Mum and my Dad James Joseph Tobin moved to Cambridge, England. I am 66 now and live in Bordeaux France with my 2 sons Declan 30 and Connor 27. Does anyone know or remember any of us. It would be great to know more about our family tree for my 2 sons sake. Thank you.

Chris Rutledge
Chris Rutledge here. My great grandfather, John Francis Rutledge emigrated from the Enniskillen region to Liverpool, north west England. Many records were destroyed around that time and the trail has gone cold. I am told that JF had brothers who moved to North America. I’m told the name originates near Bewcastle, nr Carlisle, England and have been trying to find any connection in my family from NW England to Ireland

Hi, just doing my family tree. Found a Margaret Rutledge who was my great gran, then I THINK her parents were William and Margaret, and she has lots of brothers and sisters. I say I think because it is difficult to know for sure using ancestry. If true the family seemed to originate from Newbliss, Co Monaghan? any help always appreciated

Hello. I just got my DNA results from Ancestry.com. Turns out what I have known my whole life to be true, I don't look it, but I have roots in Ireland and Scottland. It's only 5%, but It explains a lot about me and how I have felt my whole life. I am very happy to have found this site and would love to figure out who I could be connected to, as my daughter and I would love to travel to Ireland next year, maybe meet some relations.

I am a lost Rutledge.
Mum & Dad - no connections with Dad's family.
( Passed some while ago.)
I came across a wool winter sweater (long since lost) -- knitted across the front, as part of the sweater - was the crest above: Stag & Stars -- nearly identical to this page.
Family lore: Dad wanted to spend winter hours relaxing with mum -- So he learned to knit and Dad himself knitted the sweater with Stag & Stars.
Again, I'm a lost Rutledge, We had no extended family. Dad never, ever talked about history or relatives. When Mum passed, I'm on my own. No siblings. No children.
Dad: Frank William Rutledge, Minnesota (~1912)
What can you tell me about my past - Where is home country?
Thanks,
Dr. Gary A Rutledge, Physicist.

Hi John Ruttledge. My mother was called Gladys Margaret Ruttledge from Waterford. Not many have the double "tt" spelling! She was born in 1908 and moved to Cambridge UK in the 50's with my Dad James Joseph Tobin (also from Waterford) and their 4 daughters. I am the youngest 66 and now live in Bordeaux France. I wonder if we are in any way connected. My mother had 3 brothers. One worked in banking in Dublin and finally settled in Cork. 2 left and set up businesses South Africa. And my mother Gladys lived in Cambridge UK. Let me know if you know of any other family members and where we are today. It would be interesting to know more about your background. Kind regards. Lorraine Owens (married name). Thank you.
