MCGINTY Family History

This famous Irish clan surname, is recorded in many spellings including MacGinty, McGinty, MacEntee, McEntee, Genty, Ginidy, Ginty, Ginity, Ginnity, Ginnety, and others. It descends from the Gaelic Mac an tSaoi meaning the son of the scholar, early scholars of Ireland being known as the "saoi". Given that the clan were long famous for their territorial disputes with their neighbours, has lead some to suggest that the surname was a nickname, and an ironic one at that! What is certain is that for varied reasons not unconnected with song, the clan is well known world wide. The modern homeland is County Donegal, and in particular those parts which border on Counties Tyrone and Fermanagh, and without a prefix in County Mayo...

( The sponsors or godparents in the 1853 baptism are given as William Guinty and Mary Mungovan. Pig Market would correspond to Market-Place, Cloghaun-street, Cloghaun-a-gour-lane and Garraun-a-killa-lane in Clonroad Beg, Drumcliff and The Mall, all in the town of Ennis. This is very much the centre of the town.) I have found this information. List of person nominated by Purchasers of Land in South Australia for passages to that Colony, we have received Embarkment orders to join the ship Royal Albert. Number of Application 605 Name of emigrants: William, Stephen, James, Patrick I cannot read the Purchaser of land but Name of depositor Michael Ginty. Does this mean Michael and Mary were already in Australia? I cannot find what ship Michael and Mary came to Australia on. Sorry it is so long.
