HYNES Family History

Recorded as Hine, Hyne, Hines and Hynes, this is an English or Irish surname. It has two distinct possible origins, each with its own history and derivation. Firstly, it may be of Anglo-Saxon origin, and an occupational name for a servant in a great household. The derivation is from the Middle English word "hine", meaning a lad or servant and originally a collective term for a body of servants, from the Olde English pre 7th century word "hiwan", meaning a household. Servants in important households were highly regarded, and frequently held senior positions enjoying a number of privileges. Such posts would often become hereditary...

    Brenda Goodrich

Hello.  My name is Brenda Goodrich (Goodrich is my married name).  I'm looking for history on my great grandmother Anne Elizabeth Hynes.  She came to the United States around 1918 and married a Lyttleton James Scott.  I've been able to trace her to Galway Ireland through death certificates and children's Birth Certificates.  I do know she was a fortune teller and was told she spoke to the dead.

    Hynes

I traced my Hynes lineage to 1811 possibly Galway Ireland, Thomas Hynes. He relocated to Newfoundland at some point and married a Mi’kmaq woman named Elizabeth Saunders and had 9 children. They lived in the Fortune Bay, English Harbour East area. Their son Joseph (1842-1929) my great great great grandfather relocated to Woods Island on the west coast of NL where the family continued to grow and many of us still live in that area Any information with regards to Thomas’ history prior to moving to Newfoundland would be appreciated, although the information I have is incomplete and vague. There is a tale about Mr Hynes and a man named Michael Hefferon changing papers and therefore identities while sailing to North America but it’s unclear how valid this is

My book ‘The Hynes of Ireland’ is available from Amazon Kindle and Paperback – 13 Dec 2016 Much of this book concerns the life and legends of King Guaire mac Colmain, who lived in the ancient palace of Raith Durlais until his death in the year 663. The poets of old as knew his ancient ringfort on the shore of Kinvara Bay as: ‘The white sheeted fort of soft stones, Habitation of poets and bishops’. The rest of the book is about the descendants of Guaire: particularly the Hynes and the O’ Shaughnessys and to a lesser extent the other lineal descendants of that seventh century king - the O ‘ Clearys, the Cahans, the O’ Cahills and the Killikellys. Their ancient friends and foes are mentioned too: among them - the Berminghams, Burkes, De Lacys, Fitzgeralds, Gregorys, Martins, MacDermots, MacFirbis’s, MacNamaras, O’Briens, O’Connors, O ‘Donnells, O’ Dowds, O ‘Flahertys, O’Kellys, O ‘ Loughlins, O ‘Moghans and the O’ Neills and others whose names and deeds have been mentioned in the history of the territory of the Ui Fiahrach Aidhne over the past 2000 years or so years.

My great great grandmother was Alice Hynes, daughter of Patrick Hynes. She was born in 1825 in Ballyscally, Clogher, Tyrone, Ireland. She came to Providence, RI., America during The Famine and married Patrick McCarron in Providence. She died in Bloomington, IL in 1871. There were several Hynes in Ballyscally in 1829 and 1831. I bought James Patrick Hynes's book "The Hynes of Ireland" and I am wondering if he or anyone could tell me how, why and when member(s) of the Hynes clan left Galway and went to County Tyrone.

Hello! My grandfathers brother Pat Hynes left a small village in Galway,Ireland around the late 1890s or earlier 1900s and settled in NYC, USA Brooklyn, maybe and married a Hession girl I think. He had one son named Robert A who married an Ethel OBrien from MA and they had three children John - died young, Robert Jnr and Florence. Im anxious to find out if there are any descendants of above alive today. Robert and Ethel lived in Brooklyn in the 1940s not sure if they stayed there or moved elsewhere. Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you. Galwaygirl
