GLEESON Family History
This is an anglicized form of the Olde Gaelic O' Glasain or O' Gliasain. The Gaelic prefix "O" indicates "male descendant of", plus the personal byname Glasain, from "glas" literally meaning "green", but used here in the sense of inexperienced. This sept belonged to the ancient territory of Mac Ui Bhriain Aradh's country, that is the area between Nenagh and Lough Derg on the border of North County Tipperary. The Gleesons were of the same stock as the O'Donegans, whose name derives from the Gaelic 'donn' meaning brown or dark.Select Audience

Jacimay Richards Egerton
OOPS!!! I added wrong information for jeremiah Gleeson. He came to Bolton about 1840. Rodger died in Nenagh. I can't track Rodgers life at all as much as i try. Sorry about the confusion.

My grandfather x3 is jeremiah Gleeson born in 1816. I have no evidence of his birth parents but I believe his father was Rodger Gleeson 1798 to 1873. Jeremiah settled here in Bolton about 1940 and married Mary Maher. Jeremiah died here in Bolton in 1884. He had 4 children, also here in Bolton Lancashire.
Eileen Gleeson
My father Thomas Gleeson was born in Limerick Ireland about 1923 and came to the US, Chicago area, in 1948. He married Beatrice Clinnin in 1952. His brothers Michael, Owen, Timothy and John also moved to Chicago. A sister Nellie (Eileen) stayed in Ireland and married a McGrath. The oldest brother Philip never married and never left the farm in Limerick. I have one sister Kathleen and my brother James who died in December 2017.

I run the Gleeson DNA Project that aims to characterise the origin and evolution of the Gleeson surname. All are welcome to join. Find out more information here ... https://gleesondna.blogspot.com/p/welcome.html

Michael Gleeson/Gleason married Bridget Dorsey (1835ish?). Michael was from somewhere in County Tipperary. Bridget was from Nenagh. Thayer came to the US , and settled in Wilson, New York. Donโt have exact immigration date, but my great grandmother was born in 1846, in Wilson.
