COULTER Family History
This long-established surname, widespread in Scotland and in the Ulster counties of Down and Antrim, is of locational origin either from the parish and village of Coulter in Lanarkshire, or from the lands of Coulter in Aberdeenshire, so called from the Scots Gaelic elements "cul", meaning "back", (in the sense of position) and "tir", country, land, district, territory. Locational surnames, such as this, were originally given to local landowners, and the Lord of the Manor, and especially as a means of identification to those who left their birthplace to settle elsewhere. Early examples of the surname include: Alexander de Cultre, who witnessed a grant by Maldoueny, Earl of Lennox, to Stephen de Blantyr circa 1248, and Andrew de Cultyr, who held land in Aberdeen in 1281...Select Audience

I have the death cert. on Catherine Elizabeth Coulter, b 1852 Canada. Father's name is Alexander Coulter from Ireland. Mother unknown. I am not sure where in Ireland her father is from or a birth date. Since Catherine was born in Canada in 1852 then her parents, or father, went to Canada around that time. Give or take a few years. Hoping someone may know something. May be hard since I don't even know any of her siblings. I do know she had a cousin Oliver Robinson from Canada and then moved to Chicago. She was also married in Buffalo NY in 1880.

Looking for information on Catherine Elizabeth Coulter b:June 1851 Ontario Canada d: March 5 1926 in L A California. In 1880 she married James Eckley in NY. I believe her parents came from Donegal and came to Canada around 1847-48. I came across the names of Hugh Coulter and Mary Love, not sure I am on the right track. Hopefully some knows something about this family.
