CAIRNS Family History
This interesting surname is of Scottish territorial origin from the lands of Cairns in the parish of Mid-Calder, Midlothian. The name derives from the Old Gaelic "carn" meaning cairn i.e., a pile of stones raised as a boundary marker or a memorial. The surname first appears on records in the mid 14th Century (see below). In 1363, William de Carnys and his son, Duncan de Carnys, had a Charter of the baronies of Esterquytburne and Westirquitburne from David 11, and in 1365 one, David de Carnys, noted in the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland, was bailie of Edinburgh. William de Carnys was Constable of Linlithgow Castle, and afterwards of the Castle of Edinburgh in 1372...Select Audience

I am trying to trace back my cairns line. I know of the father James Cairns possibly born 1843 Co Sligo . I have not found information on his parents or siblings. He appears to have left Ireland with a Bridget ? Born 1844 possibly Mayo . We had thought the family had come over from Co Clare.
Darren D Cairns
My Great , Great Granfather Hugh Cairns came from Sligo to England around the same time , he married a Macgrath and settled in Bradford
Gerald Karnes
My Y DNA indicates matches with Garett O'Neill, born in Ireland and my third great Grandfather, Peter B. Kerns,Kern,Carnes, was also born in Ireland in 1747 and migrated to the English Colonies of America in 1755, along with his wife Anna Jordan and young daughter Marjorie.
Am looking for evidence of genealogy connections.
