BRITT Family History
This interesting surname is of French origin and is an ethnic name for a Breton. The Bretons were originally Celts driven from South West England to North West France in the 6th Century by invading Anglo-Saxons. Some returned with the army of William the Conqueror in the Invasion of 1066 and many of those then settled in East Anglia where the English surname Brett is now widespread. Occasionally, the name may derive from the Celtic speaking people of Strathclyde, Scotland, who were known as Byrttas and Brettas until the 13th Century.Select Audience

My second Great-Grandfather, James Britt was born in 1808 in Ireland. His wife, Mary Robertson, was also Irish, and they married in 1829 in Wicklow, Ireland, and the immigrated to the United States in about 1832. He became a farmer/ vegetable gardener on the outskirts of Washington DC, and by 1855 owned 33 acres. He died in Washington DC in 1860 of cancer at the age of 52. His daughter, Mary Britt had a daughter, Mary Britt Weaver, who had a daughter, Mary Britt Hudson, who was my mother. I would love to know more about their roots in Ireland.
